Berlin is waiting for the troika and German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the Bundestag ahead of a European summit today in Brussels that ‘I don’t want to anticipate the report, but I repeat what I already said in Athens: I hope Greece will remain in the euro zone’. In this spirit, said the chancellor, ‘we are awaiting the report’.
‘The European Union must continue to develop, this is inevitable’, she said. However, Merkel added, ‘no concrete decisions will be taken’ today and tomorrow at the summit as the meeting will set the groundwork for decisions to be taken in December, indicated the chancellor. She stressed that ‘much progress has been made in Spain, Portugal and also in Greece’.
‘The countries are moving along with many reforms in the right direction’, she observed, adding that the situation in Greece ‘is far from easy’, ‘although there is a strong will to change’.
