Cacoyannis Films Kick Off in Beijing

A week-long retrospective of Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ films began Oct.11 in the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing as part of the celebrative activities for the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and China.

Ambassador of Greece to China Theodore Georgakelos addressed the retrospective’s opening ceremony, saying that he believes such cultural exchanges can better cement friendly relations between the countries since films are one of the most efficient, modern ways of cultural expression.

Michael Cacoyannis was a prominent Greek Cypriot film director born in 1922 in Limassol, Cyprus, and best known for his 1964 film Zorba the Greek. During the week-long event, Zorba the Greek will also be staged.
According to the Greek ambassador, the filmmaker distinguished himself mainly adapting classic literature to the cinema. Cacoyannis died in 2011 in Athens, aged at 89.
Other films to be staged in the coming week include Stella, Girl in Black, Electra, Trojan Women, Iphigenia and The Cherry Orchard.
