Centennial of Thessaloniki Liberation Marked in Sydney

A year-long program of events to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the liberation of Thessaloniki and Western Macedonia was officially launched by Vassilios Tolios, the Consul-General of Greece in Sydney. He urged the community to support events to promote Greece and Macedonia Hellenism under the auspices of the Pan-Macedonian Association and the Australian Hellenic Council (NSW).

Highlights of the celebrations, to be held throughout Sydney, include the Alexander the Great exhibition in Sydney’s Australian Museum and the debut of the award-winning novel Macedon: Child of a God by Paul Hansen. The Canberra-based author won the Inaugural Australian Self-Publishing Group’s Unpublished Manuscript Competition earlier this year for the work.

Drawing inspiration from the earliest stories of Hellenic history and mythology, Hansen relates the untold story of Macedon, the mythological ancestor of the Macedonians. Macedon – Child of a God has been described as “action-packed” with “characters who have personalities consistent with their roles in that world.” His research included traveling the ancient sites of Macedonia, in particular the ancient royal necropolis of Aegae (modern Vergina).

Present at the launch were eminent Greek-Australians, members of the Australian Hellenic Council NSW, the Pan-Macedonian Association of NSW, AHEPA and many more community representatives.
