Hellenic Women of Sydney Support Compatriots in Crisis-Hit Greece

Sydney’s Greek community members have never forgotten their compatriots back in their debt-ridden homeland, so they – once again– decided to prove their affection toward Greece. A number of various Hellenic Women’s Organizations in Sydney already raise money for their community locally, and now are going to direct contributions toward communities in Greece.

Marina Efthimiou from the Hellenic Lyceum (Lykion ton Ellinidon) of Sydney is hoping to raise half a million dollars, as she explained to Linda Mottram during the ABC radio show, Mornings. Seven Greek-Australian organizations that have been functioning locally in Australia, helping neglected children, needy families and abandoned elderly, will now focus on Greece, which needs urgent help during its economic crisis.

Asked about all the negative headlines hurting Greece’s international image, Hellenic Lyceum Vice President Marina Efthimiou referred to the new motto of Hellenic Women of Sydney: “Recollect, Redeliver, Redistribute” which refers to their upcoming visit to Greece. The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney was the first accredited branch of the Hellenic Lyceum outside of Greece.

It was also the first Greek women’s association to be established in Australia and began in 1951 under the guidance of its founder, Angelo Gooma. The Sydney Hellenic Lyceum is a branch of the Hellenic Lyceum Athens which is a member of the International Association of the Lyceums with its headquarters in Geneva.
