Greek Court Gives Canadian Eldorado Gold Green Light to Proceed With Gold Mining Amid Protests from Environmental Groups

Eldorado Gold is a Vancouver-based company which has become quite famous in Greece lately, not for a good reason, though. Canadian investors chose a forest area in northern Greece to run a gold mining project but Greek people of the area protested against it.

In order to complete this project, the company had to cut trees in the Straton forest, in a region close to Halkidiki. But Greek protestors filed an appeal against the company and the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, ordered them to stop cutting trees.

All this happened less than a month ago, but the Greek judges changed their mind, apparently.  A Greek Court allowed Eldorado Gold Corp. to proceed with their gold mining project, revoking the order that temporarily stopped work at the site, the Canadian company announced on Tuesday.

“We are very pleased with the decision of the Council of State and will re-initiate our surface clearing activities in Halkidiki as soon as practically possible,” Eldorado chief executive Paul Wright said in a statement.

“The judges found that this investment is of particular benefit to the Greek economy,” an official at the Council said.
