Greek Team “Symbiosis” Participates in Imagine Cup World Festival 2012 in Sydney

The 10th edition of the annual Imagine Cup World Festival was completed this year in Syney and featured many competitors whose projects were designed to enhance the quality of life for the disabled.

The top team in software design was quadSquad from Ukraine with its Enable Talk device that uses gloves with sensors to recognize language patterns and then transmit them via Bluetooth to a Windows Phone device that uses the Microsoft Speech API and Bing API to translate. This innovative project will allow individuals with hearing problems to verbally communicate.

Imagine Cup World Festival is an international student competition that awards technological inventions and innovations that aim at solving some of the most crucial problems of the world.

The Greek team that took part in this year’s Festival, Symbiosis, ranked sixth in the Software Design category. The team consisted of students from the Electrical Engineering Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Dimitris Mandiliotis, Kostas Toumbas, Katerina Kypriotis and Kiki Kaza. Their project revolved around a new approach to supporting and improving Alzheimer’s patients’ everyday life.

Deputy Professor of Electronic Engineering and Computers Mr. Leontios Hatzileontiadis, who mentored the Greek team Symbiosis in the competition, was presented with the Faculty Award, which was first introduced this year.

The winners of the competition were announced during the Imagine Cup World Festival and Awards Ceremony that took place in Sydney and numbered 106 competitor teams. All worldwide finalist teams that competed in Sydney this year are eligible to apply for Imagine Cup Grants, a three-year US$3 million investment by Microsoft to help students turn their ideas into reality.
