Australian Youth Football Team ‘Embraced’ Three Greek Australian Players

Young Socceroos, Australia’s national  football team for those under-20, has recently announced its 23-player squad about to take part in the Asian Football Cup (AFC U-22). But the Greek communities of Australia have an extra reason to stay focused on this Australian squad since they selected three Greek Australians for their roster.

More specifically, Terry Antonis, Jesse Makarounas and Yianni Perkatis will spend about half a month in Asia. The Qantas Young Socceroos met in Sydney on July 1st before flying to Indonesia on Monday July 2nd.

The youth team will play five football matches in about ten days for the Asian cup. On July 5th, the team will travel to Indonesia; after two days they will  play in Macau (7 July). The team has three days off until July 10th when they will play in Singapore, then in Timor East on July 12th and finally, in Japan on 15 July.

The Young Socceros will play against fellow Group E teams. The best two from this Group as well the best third team of all groups, which are 15 in total, will compete in the AFC U-22 Championship in January 2014.

Terry Antonis, born in 1993, plays for A-League team Sydney FC. He first became famous for his juggling skills at the age of 10 when he won a football talent competition on Channel 7 television show and participated in a training skills DVD with David Beckham shot in Madrid.

Jesse Makarounas plays for Perth Glory FC in the A-League as well. Despite being only 17 years old, Makarounas has already taken part in Qantas Joeys’ AFCU-16 Championship in Uzbekistan and in Qantas Australian Under -17, having traveled to many countries of the world in pursuit of  his dream.

Last but not least, Yianni Perkatis, born in 1994, has also represented Australia in Mexico, as a football player of the national under-17 association football team.
