Presenting Canada’s World Cup Goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos

The FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for Canada began earlier this month and the Greek-Canadian goalkeeper Kenny (Kyriakos) Stamatopoulos was called to take his place amongt the national football players in view of the friendly match between Canada and the USA on June 3rd.

Stamatopoulos, who is currently playing for AIK Stockholm,  is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in Norway and Sweden for the last several years.

Born in Kalamata, Greece, the 32-year-old Diaspora goalkeeper began playing football for the “Black Storm” of Messenia and did not hesitate to pursue his career abroad. Although he fully appreciates Canada and its people, Stamatopoulos never hides his true love for his home country and especially his hometown in the prefecture of Messenia, which he sees as the ideal place to live with his family in the future.

Stamatopoulos has very often expressed his wish of returning to Greece and becoming a goalkeeper trainer so that he passes on his experience and knowledge to younger generations.

For the past decade, Stamatopoulos has played for different Swedish teams, such as En Kopping SK, Boden and Tromson, while for the last two seasons he was part of the historic AIK Stockholm Club.

Stamatopoulos was a former member of the under-23 national team in July 2001 at Jeux de la Francophonie. He made his senior debut for Canada in a November 2001 friendly match against Malta and, as of October 2011, has earned six caps.
