Aborigines Forced to Move Their Tents For Greek Paniyiri

Hundreds of policemen destroyed tents of Aborigines in Brisbane National Park, where the Greek Community plans to celebrate their annual Paniyiri.

The policemen arrested 30 Aborigines and violently removed 80 more demonstrators. Australia’s natives have been protesting since March for their rights. They had a tent-Embassy, where they gathered to talk about their requests.

Municipality of Brisbane asked them to move peacefully from the park so that the Greek Community could hold its Paniyiri this weekend. They refused and police took action. Aborigines stress, however, the fact that their fight for “national sovereignity” is not over.

It is said that the Greek Community of Brisbane sent an email to the Municipality to complain about the Aborigines’ tent, which lay at the main entrance of the park, hindering the Paniyiri attendants.

Aborigines’ leaders claim that “it is not a takeover, but a right that first inhabitants of Australia have. Whether Greek-Australians and other immigrants like it or not, this country is ours. We own this and fight for our rights.”
