Al Jazeera’ s show Listening Post featured an eight-minute long report on the financial crisis of the Greek media and how it affects the press freedom in the country that gave birth to the idea of democracy.
After the May 6 general elections in Greece, reporter Marcela Pizarro revealed the shocking image Greek media presented to the outside world and how they have become part of the crisis plaguing the country. While thousands of fired Greek journalists are still waiting for their unpaid wages and new “alternative” cooperative media sources emerge, mainstream media are being accused of a biased approach to the news, of bringing “chaos and panic” to the people and manipulating the public opinion.
With examples of outcast media voices reporting on the Greek situation and the rigid news directives employed by the media giants of Greece, the feature video aims at shedding light on the political and financial influences shaping the mass media advocates’ stance towards the news.
The show host commented whether the Greek media reflect the public’s concerns, or their owners’ interests.
