Singing was always a passion for Greek-Australian pop sensation Vassy, whose new album, Beautiful Day, drops May 1. Inspired by American jazz vocalist Billie Holiday, Vassy decided to pursue her dream of becoming a recording artist early on.
Growing up in Australia after her parents emigrated from Greece, Vassy didn’t have it so easy when it came to studying music. Her choir teacher told her she couldn’t sing, and asked her to leave the group. Years later, she proved that teacher wrong, winning a national songwriting contest for Triple J Radio in Australia, which ultimately got her music career on track.
“Yeah, that story,” she says with a laugh. “Let’s just say that moment of rejection made me stronger and [winning] felt good.”
Warner Brothers took notice of the young Greek-Australian beauty, whose vocals are a jazzy/pop blend, and signed her soon after the contest. But Vassy didn’t want to conquer music on just one continent – she crossed over to the American scene, and her songs can be heard on television shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Human Target” and “Ugly Betty.” Taking her music to the big screen, Vassy’s song “Desire” is on the soundtrack for the comedy-horror flick “The Cabin in the Woods,” and is also featured in the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Swimsuit campaign. You may have also recognized her single “We Are Young” in numerous commercials, such as Nike, Chevy, Skechers, and Google.
She says her new album Beautiful Day, which is available for pre-order on iTunes, is “quirky” and “uplifting.” Described as “fizzy dance pop music,” the collaborative effort boasts some of the industry’s top producers, including Tim Meyers (OneRepublic), Jacques Brautbar (Phantom Planet), John Ernst & Skylar “EXC” Mones, Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Christina Aguilera, Hilary Duff), Richard Vission (Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga) and Denny Western (The Kooks).
Up next for the songstress is a performance in New York at the “Forty Under 40” gala for The Greek America Foundation, then she heads to Los Angeles to perform at a fashion event and to prepare for the launch of Beautiful Day’s May 1 release at Hotel Café, which is open to the public.
