Germans Protest Outside German Embassy in Support of the Greeks

Members of an artist group from Hamburg and German citizens living in Greece gathered Friday morning outside their country’s Embassy in Kolonaki, Athens, to protest against the German policies towards the debt-ridden country and to declare their support and solidarity with the Greek people.
The gathering was also attended by the president of the Greek Journalists Union (ESIEA), D. Trimis, and members of the leftist party SYRIZA, including MP P. Lafazanis.
A young woman threw an egg at the Embassy building within a performance the artist group put on live. Tension escalated when the police tried to detain her, and Mr. Trimis and Mr. Lafazanis intervened to prevent her detention. The two men were pushed back by the police, who finally led the woman to the Police Department. She was later released.
In his statements afterwards, Mr. Lafazanis noted that such behavior on behalf of the Greek police is shameful and the peaceful protest of the Germans was disrupted by the violent handlings of the officers.
