Greek Myth of Elektra at Perth Festival 2012

The Greek Myth of Elektra is part of this year’s Perth Festival. Elektra is arguably the darkest and most gripping 100 minutes in opera, a story of fanatical love and revenge that drives performers and orchestras to their limit. It was the first collaboration between Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the most important composer-librettist partnerships in operatic history, and is as powerful today as in its 1909 Dresden premiere.

Director Matthew Lutton’s new production brings startling visual intensity to the music, with Danish soprano Eva Johansson in the title role. Enter Elektra’s vivid dreams and desires – she has seen her father murdered, the city around her is cursed and she longs for justice. As Strauss’s music rises in beauty and falls in horror, Elektra searches for light in the darkness.

Sung in German with English surtitles.
