Press Hails Unity Government Agreement

Today the Greek press hails the agreement reached late last evening by the ruling socialist party and the right-wing opposition on the formation of a government of national unity, calling it a “historic” deal.
“In the end the first great step towards the country’s rescue has been made,” headlines pro-government newspaper Ta Nea, adding that it was “a historic day for Greece. after a nightmare weekend”, and that the leaders of the country’s two main political parties, Premier Giorgio Papandreou of Pasok and Antonis Samaras of Nea Dimocratia, “have laid the foundation for a unity government, with the eyes of the entire world focused on Greece.” Ta Nea, like most other Greek newspapers, mention Lucas Papadimos, former vice director of the European Central Bank, as next Prime Minster. “A last-minute agreement on national unity, avoiding a disaster,” is the headline of economic newspaper Naftemporiki.
The daily also stresses that the deal reached by Papandreou and Samaras is a “historic agreement”.
The centre-right newspaper Ethnos also welcomes the “historic deal for national unity,” while Eleftheros Typos (right-wing) is pleased with “the fall of Papandreou and the fact that early elections will be held on February 19.” “A first victory” the liberal daily Kathimerini calls the deal closed by Papandreou and Samaras, adding that “the people of Greece could heave a sigh of relief yesterday (Sunday), when the two political leaders finally reached a historic agreement, in collaboration with the President of Greece, Karolos Papoulias”.
