Hellenic Parliament Says Greece Supports Academic Departments for Modern Greek Studies in Foreign Universities

Fifteen academic units, at universities abroad were financially supported by the Ministry of Culture in 2010.
As mentioned in a document of the Deputy Minister of Tourism, George Nikitiadis, submitted to the Hellenic Parliament, the Directorate of International Relations of the Ministry of Culture, within the context of promoting Greek culture abroad, morally and financially supports academic units for Modern Greek studies (chairs, departments) in higher educational institutions abroad.
The Deputy Minister also attached a catalog of universities funded in 2010, and according to Mr. Nikitiadis, 6,000 Euros were granted to the University of Zagreb, Croatia, 4,000 Euros to the University of Amsterdam, Holland, 6,000 Euros to the University of Kiev, Ukraine, 10,000 Euros to the University of Tbilisi, Georgia, 12,000 Euros to Moscow Lomonosov University of Russia, 3,000 Euros to the University of St. Petersburg – Classical Lyceum in Russia, 3,500 Euros to Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, 4,000 Euros to Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, 6,000 Euros to the University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 15,000 Euros to the University of Michigan, 7,000 Euros to San Francisco University, 7,000 Euros to Boston College, 7,000 Euros to Harvard University, 20.000 Euros to the Modern Greek Studies Association USA, in the United States and 15,000 Euros to Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.
As the Deputy Minister states, the Directorate of International Relations of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, proceeds annually to the financial support of academic units of universities abroad, based on specific criteria (institutional framework, educational action and cultural activities). This requires the submission of a relevant request, until March 31st of each year, in addition to a report on the activities of the previous year.
The final decision on the provision of funds is directly linked to the allocated budget percentage of each year, available to the Service, for the specific funding action, and as Mr. Nikitiadis notes, the amount of the respective funding has not been finalized yet for 2011.
The document was submitted to the Hellenic Parliament in response to a question by LAOS MP, Costas Aivaliotis, asking whether third countries were funded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism during the economic crisis.
Mr. Nikitiadis specifies that the Directorate of International Relations does not provide funding to third countries. It collaborates with third countries on bilateral and multilateral partnerships, where applicable, and within the context of promoting Greek culture abroad, it morally and financially supports academic units of Modern Greek studies (chairs, departments etc), in higher educational institutions abroad.
