German MP Giorgos Chatzimarkakis Visits Crete for Development of New Applications in Energy Sector

“Crete may set the example in the implementation of renewable sources of energy in Europe and in the Mediterranean,” stated George Chatzimarkakis, the  German MP of Cretan origin, to the TV crew of German state channel ZDF, which had followed him to Crete to cover his initiative to develop new applications in the energy sector and to explore possibilities of cooperation between Greece and German companies.
”I want to reassure the Germans,” he stated, “that in a few years, Crete will be a model of green development because people here recognize the importance of the environment, they have expertise and want to develop applications that will help stimulate tourism”.
Mr. Chatzimarkakis said that Crete and Greece could benefit from renewable energy sources (RES), as Germany is interested in buying electricity produced here from RES, because citizens want to protect the environment and are willing to work hard to do so.
“For this reason, nuclear power plants in Germany are shutting down, and by 2020, there won’t be any of them. This energy will be replaced by renewable sources of energy. Crete, as well as Greece as a whole due to the sunshine, will play a pivotal role in this.  Especially Crete, which due to eco-friendly projects in tourism, can attract more tourists. There are German investors looking to exploit the sun of Crete and this will provide jobs and growth “, Chatzimarkakis stated, after his first meeting in Heraklion, to the Institute for Research and Technology, its Director Costas Stephanides, and to regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, to whom he also praised effort to support the development of Crete and investments.
Speaking on the German channel, Mr Arnaoutakis noted that both he and the Region as a whole try to create the appropriate investment environment, working to solve any problems of bureaucracy.
A visit and more meetings followed with company executives of Megatron and Plastics SA in Crete related to RES, as well as a visit to the wind park Vrouchas in the Hotel Porto Elounda and a meeting with businessmen associated with rental cars in order for the German channel to record the interest of local businesses in RES.
