National Book Centre of Greece Research Results

According to research carried out by the National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) in cooperation with the company “Metron Analysis”, the number of Greeks who do not read at all (40,7%) has been reduced in comparison with former research in 1999 and 2004. The number of people who read 1-9 books has augmented (44,2%), while the percentage of people who read more than 10 books is stable (8,1%).
The research was carried out from the 15th of November until the 13th of December 2010.  1,500 people participated from all over the country after taking into consideration their sex, age, where they lived and their education level.
According to the results, women read more than men. The readers choose mostly Greek and foreign literature as well as books concerning history, psychology and religion.
Moreover, the book is preferred over newspapers and magazines, but the average number of books read has been reduced to 5.6 books in 2010. However, as citizens work more and our free time is limited, this phenomenon will be more intense in the future.
Finally, it seems that new generations (15-18, 19-25, 26-34) read less, which can be justified by the expansion of the internet.
