Kalamata International Dance Festival Opens July 14th

The Kalamata International Dance Festival is the most important event of the year for the city’s International Dance Centre. It was first founded in the spring of 1995, aiming to support and promote the art of dance.
This year’s Festival features six productions, eight performances, and choreographers and dancers from five countries, namely France, Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece.
This is its 17th year of the festival’s active presence in the Greek dance scene, thanks to the support of the local authorities who support and sponsor this dance project.
Seminars and talks aimed will be given at dance students, while there will also be several events including publications and video dance productions.
From the beginning, the Festival was scheduled in two directions: the wide range of trends in contemporary dance and the attraction of larger audiences that this art-form attracts. After sixteen years of active presence, the festival every year sees an enthusiastic widely-varied audience.
Kalamata, the city of dance, is set to host its 17th annual programme of events between the 14th and 21st of July.
The Festival opens on July 14th with “Babel” (Words), a co-production by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet and Antony Gormley, that will also be presented the following day.
The offices of the Kalamata International Dance Festival are situated in the Zoumbouleio Megaro. In the Festival’s early days, performances were restricted to the city’s historic Kalamata Castle Amphitheatre. Today, however, its activities have spread to the Municipal Regional Theatre of Kalamata, the Kalamata Municipal Cultural Centre, the Kalamata National Stadium, the Polykladikon Lyceum Gym and the Paralia Gymnasium.
