Strike Is Over, PPC And Private Suppliers Counting Losses

Public Power Corp and private electricity suppliers count the losses of recent strikes, after union GENOP decided to suspend labour actions. The company was losing an amount of €3-5m each day of strike, equivalent to the increase of marginal value of the system caused by the unavailability of power plants. Besides the immediate losses during the strike, large amounts of precious water resources were wasted for the operation of hydropower stations, while the situation in lignite plants is also critical, as fuel is near to exhaustion.
But, also private suppliers Energa and Aegean are estimated to have recorded losses of €2m each during the strike, because of the increase of the marginal value of the system. Sources note that the two companies are preparing to appeal against the Hellenic Transmission System Operator and probably the administration of PPC. They believe that PPC delayed to take legal action against the strike and allowed it to evolve for 10 days.
In any case, the end of the strike is considered a strategic defeat of GENOP, as none of its requests was granted despite the strong and long strike. It was not opposed to the privatization of PPC, but also against the creation of subsidiaries, which would cause the separation of GENOP in three pieces.
