“Gods, People and Greek Money” Exhibition Opens, Vienna

“Gods, People and Greek Money” is the title of the exhibition in Vienna, Austria.

The 22nd June was the opening of the exhibition and it lasts until October 16th.

The aim of the exhibition is firstly to show the financial aspect of the Greek world from the 7th century B.C. until the Hellenistic Times of Alexander the Great, and secondly to present the significant role of the symbols that appear on the coins. These symbols inform us about the political, cultural and religious daily life of Greeks.  Looking at a coin of this period you can find kings, Gods and mythological elements.

Michael Alram, director of Coin Cabinet stressed that the value of coin remained unchanged. It is thought that cut coin was a symbol of identity and autonomy of a city.
