Australia Needs 16,000 Immigrants to Combat Severe Labor Shortages

According to “The Australian”, Australia is in dire need of an immediate “import” of 16,000 skilled immigrants from abroad. The newspaper  reported that the men will mainly work as miners in Western Australia and Queensland, where there is an increasing shortage of skilled labour.

This year, approximately 10,000 migrants entered Australia under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, whereby employers can sponsor a skilled migrant on the condition they live and work in the area for at least two years. Peter McDonald, an Australian National University demographer believes that this will make little difference to the labor shortages as the number of immigrants arriving include family and children, as well as workers.
