Greece Welcomes UNSC Sanctions on Libya

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas met with Greek Defense Minister Evangelos Venizleos

NATO member Greece called for an immediate ceasefire in Libya on Friday, saying it wanted a peaceful solution to the conflict and smooth transition to democracy.
Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said that Greece was, however, ready to cooperate with its allies in foreign military interventions concerning the conflict.
“It is not too late,” said Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas. “Greece believes that the goal of everyone should be for a solution to the crisis in Libya, the return of stability and smooth transition of democracy.”
He stated that: “We care ready to cooperate with our allies so that international legality can be respected.”
Droutsas met with Greek Defence Minister Evalgelos Venizleos to discuss logistical help that Greece could offer, should NATO start military operations against Libya.
NATO said its ambassadors would meet on Friday to discuss their response to the Security Council resolution authorising a no-fly zone and the use of force in Libya.
The UN Security Council authorised late on Thursday a no-fly zone over Libya and military strikes to curb the advance of Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, hours after the Libyan leader threatened to storm the rebel bastion of Benghazi.
Any NATO operation needs to be approved by the 28-NATO states, and both Turkey and Germany have spoken against the alliance intervening in Libya.
The naval and air force base at Souda Bay on the southern island of Crete is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.
