Yesi Cyclone Leaves 1 Man Dead & 2 Missing, Queensland

One man is dead and two people are missing after the Yasi cyclone smashed across the north Queensland coast at Mission Beach around midnight on Wednesday.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh confirmed the man’s death this morning, saying he was using a generator in a closed room after his power was cut by the storm.

Cyclone Yasi had a wind forecast of up to 300 km. per hour.  It hit Australia tearing off roofs and toppling trees although it ended up missing heavily populated areas. Many Greeks in Queensland lost their homes and properties. 100,000 people were left without electricity. Greek real estate agent Hercules Argiros, stated that he was a lucky man as his house did not undergo any damages. “Two houses in our region were destroyed”, he said.

Greek priest father Konstantinos Tsakalos said that he is trying to contact the Greeks of Queensland, to comprehend the amount of damage.
