The Cleaning of Asopos River Begins

After many years of delays, the Greek authorities have started a cleaning project of the Asopos River which is located in Viotia, in Central Greece. The cleaning of Asopos is vital as the river provides houses and farms of the area with water.
In order to reduce the river’s pollution, the Environment Ministry in cooperation with the Athens Water and Sewage Company (EYDAP) and the Municipality of Tanagra will invest about 40 million euros for the creation of a new irrigation system and the transportation of industrial waste to Metamorphosi.
It has been found that the water of Asopos contains carcinogenic elements such as hexavelant chromium, an extremely dangerous substance, which has caused many incidences of cancer in the area.
Finally, after many campaigns of the residences and the condemnation of Greece by the Council of Europe in June for not facing the problem, the cleaning of the river has begun.
