Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) upgraded its weather warning Tuesday, October 13, forecasting severe thunderstorms, possible hail and winds reaching 10 on the Beaufort scale across several regions through Wednesday.

The agency raised its previous advisory to a dangerous weather warning as heavy rainfall spread across the country, with coastal and island areas expected to face the most intense conditions.

Red Alert for Evia

Evia was placed under a red warning from Tuesday afternoon through late Wednesday afternoon, with prolonged and intense rainfall forecast.

Orange warnings were issued for the Ionian islands of Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, western Central Greece and the western and southern Peloponnese through Tuesday evening.

Halkidiki was expected to experience heavy storms from midday Tuesday, while the Sporades islands and eastern Thessaly, particularly Magnesia, were forecast to face prolonged rainfall beginning in the afternoon.

Storms were also expected to affect northeastern Peloponnese, eastern Central Greece, including Athens and the wider Attica region, and parts of the Cyclades from late Tuesday afternoon.

The Dodecanese was expected to experience severe weather overnight, while western Crete, particularly Chania and Rethymno, was placed under an orange warning from Tuesday evening.

Winds Could Reach 10 Beaufort

EMY warned that northeasterly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort, locally reaching 10 Beaufort for brief periods, would develop over the northern Aegean from Tuesday evening before extending into the central Aegean.

The strong winds are expected to continue until late Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, the most severe rainfall is forecast to persist in Evia until late afternoon, while storms in the Sporades, Magnesia and the Dodecanese are expected to ease by the afternoon.

Heavy rainfall in Halkidiki is forecast to subside during the morning, while storms in Crete could continue until late Wednesday night.

EMY said the severe weather could include localized hailstorms, particularly in coastal and maritime areas.
