The 2026 edition of The 50 World’s Best Bars list, unveiled on October 7 in Milan, confirms Athens’ growing presence on the global bar scene. Three bars from the capital of Greece made the top 50: Line at No. 5, The Bar in Front of the Bar at No. 19, and Barro Negro at No. 40. The result is not an isolated achievement but part of a broader transformation the city has undergone in recent years.
Athens as a Rising Destination
Athens has steadily upgraded its infrastructure, services, and cultural offerings. Tourism has grown markedly, with roughly 8.7 million international visitors recorded in 2025—an increase of about 10 percent from the previous year—according to figures cited by Greece’s National Tourism Organization. The city was also named Cocktail Culture City of the Year at the 2026 Travel & Taste Awards organized by the British magazine olive, ahead of Paris, New York, and Mexico City. Organizers highlighted Athens’ decade-long rise, its modern cocktail scene that draws on local ingredients, and the role of Greek hospitality.
This evolution has shifted Athens from a traditional stopover en route to the islands into a standalone city-break destination. The cocktail scene illustrates the change: independent bars have invested in technique, sustainability, and originality, earning attention from international voters and visitors alike.
Industry professionals invested in creating spaces of high aesthetic appeal, research and flavor development, and the adoption of sustainable practices. As a result, Athens is no longer viewed only as a historical transit destination, but also as an autonomous, vibrant culinary metropolis where tradition harmoniously blends with contemporary global trends.
The Three Athens Bars on the List
Line, located in Kato Petralona, secured fifth place worldwide and received the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award 2026. Housed in a former art gallery, the bar emphasizes fermentation, house-made fruit wines, beers, and a zero-waste approach. It has remained in the global top 10 for three consecutive years (No. 6 in 2024, No. 8 in 2025).
The Bar in Front of the Bar, on Petraki Street in central Athens, climbed 28 places—from No. 47 in 2025 to No. 19—and won the Nikka Highest Climber Award. What began as a street-side pop-up in 2021 has kept a deliberately informal, creative style. Earlier in 2026 it ranked second on Europe’s 50 Best Bars list.
Barro Negro, on Paparigopoulou Street, rose from No. 62 in 2025 to No. 40, entering the global top 50 for the first time. The bar focuses on agave spirits and Mexican drinking culture, informed by the founders’ research trips to Mexico.
Together with additional Greek bars appearing in the extended 51–100 ranking, the results point to depth rather than one-off successes.
The Global Top 10 for 2026
According to the official The 50 Best Bars 2026 ranking:
1 Bar Leone – Hong Kong
2 Moebius Milano – Milan
3 Alquímico – Cartagena
4 Bar Us – Bangkok
5 Line – Athens
6 Handshake Speakeasy – Mexico City
7 Zest – Seoul
8 Connaught Bar – London
9 Lady Bee – Lima
10 Bar Mauro – Mexico City
Bar Leone retained the top spot for the second consecutive year. Europe placed 18 bars in the top 50. Athens is one of several cities with three entries, alongside Hong Kong, Paris, New York, London, Mexico City, and Bangkok.
The list is compiled by The 50 Best Bars Academy, more than 800 drinks experts from 29 geographic regions with a 50/50 gender balance. Voters submit eight choices based on experiences over the previous 18 months; strict rules limit the number of votes that can go to bars in a voter’s home country. There is no fixed checklist of criteria—judgments rest on the experts’ personal assessments.
The appearance of three Athens bars in the 2026 global top 50 fits the city’s larger trajectory: rising visitor numbers, improved service quality, and the emergence of a creative scene that blends local character with international standards. These rankings do not mark an endpoint but signal that Athens has established a lasting place among the cities shaping contemporary cocktail culture.
