A 58-year-old German woman tourist died after lightning struck near a beach on Greece’s Rhodes island on Friday, October 2. Her 62-year-old husband suffered minor injuries in the incident at Lothiarika, near Lardos.

The couple were walking on sandy ground near the shoreline when the lightning struck. They had arrived on Rhodes several days earlier for a vacation. Preliminary accounts suggest they had been swimming shortly before the incident.

An ambulance crew reached the scene and found the woman without a pulse. Emergency personnel took both tourists to Archangelos Health Center. Medical staff confirmed her death and gave her husband first aid. Authorities continue to investigate the precise circumstances.

Further thunderstorms forecast for the Dodecanese

Greece’s Civil Protection Ministry issued a fresh severe-weather warning on Friday, covering the southern Aegean.

The forecast includes heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Dodecanese, the island group that includes Rhodes. Meteorologists expect those conditions from midday Saturday, October 3, through midday Sunday, October 4. The bulletin also forecasts strong northeasterly winds across the Aegean through Saturday afternoon.

Civil Protection officials urged residents and visitors to avoid outdoor activities along the coast during severe weather. Their guidance specifically identifies lightning as a danger in coastal and marine areas.

Lothiarika and Lardos on southeastern Rhodes

Lothiarika lies in the Lardos coastal area, near Lindos, on the southeastern side of Rhodes. Its shoreline combines sand and pebbles, with hotels and vacation villas nearby. The local tourism guide describes a beach roughly one kilometer long, around 0.6 miles. Furthermore beach facilities include sunbeds, umbrellas, and water sports.

Lardos village sits inland, approximately four kilometers, or 2.5 miles, from Lothiarika beach. Its tree-lined central square serves as a gathering place, with cafés, restaurants, and a fountain. Moreover, locals meet there for coffee and games of tavli, the Greek version of backgammon.

Nearby Lindos contains one of the island’s major archaeological landmarks, its hilltop acropolis. The area combines coastal accommodation with access to historic sites and village life.

Rhodes, Greece’s largest Dodecanese island

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese and Greece’s fourth-largest island. Its landscape includes seaside resorts, mountain villages, beaches, and archaeological sites.

In Rhodes Town, medieval fortifications surround streets shaped by the Knights of St. John and later Ottoman rule. UNESCO added the medieval city to its World Heritage List in 1988. Its landmarks include the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master.

Finally, for visitors facing thunderstorms, Civil Protection advises leaving the sea immediately and moving away from bodies of water. People outdoors should seek shelter inside a building or car, rather than beneath an isolated tall tree.
