The United Nations marks the International Day of Peace on September 21 as world leaders prepare to gather in New York for the annual General Assembly.
The 2026 observance comes under the theme “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.” The United Nations is using the day to call for stronger efforts to build peace at every level.
The message comes as the UN hosts its High-Level Week, bringing governments together to address conflicts and other global challenges.
UN Calls for Investment in Peace
The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981. In 2001, the Assembly unanimously designated September 21 as a day of non-violence and ceasefire.
This year, the UN is highlighting the role of what it calls the “everyday architects of peace.” They include volunteers, civil society leaders, peacebuilders and people working within their communities.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on world leaders to invest in diplomacy, dialogue, negotiation and peacekeeping.
He has also linked peace with investment in health, education, nutrition and social protection, as well as the protection of human rights and dignity.
The UN message stresses that peace does not depend only on agreements between governments. It also develops through actions in neighborhoods, classrooms and communities.
World Leaders Prepare for the General Assembly
The International Day of Peace coincides with the UN’s annual High-Level Week in New York.
The 81st session of the General Assembly opened on September 8. The General Debate begins on September 22 and continues through September 26, with a final day on September 28.
Heads of state, government leaders and other senior representatives will address the Assembly during the debate.
The UN says the meetings will focus on international cooperation and interconnected global challenges. The program also includes high-level meetings on climate action, development, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness.
The diplomatic agenda also includes major international crises. Reporting ahead of the General Assembly has highlighted Ukraine, the Middle East, the Palestinian issue and Sudan among the issues expected to draw attention in New York.
Among the prominent figures expected in New York are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The UN’s International Day of Peace message and the General Assembly’s diplomatic agenda are separate parts of the week. Together, however, they place peace and international cooperation at the center of attention in New York.
