S&P Global Ratings, one of the major global credit rating agencies, has affirmed Greece’s long-term sovereign credit rating at BBB, with a stable outlook, maintaining the country’s investment-grade status following its scheduled review on Friday.
The US-based rating agency also maintained Greece’s short-term rating at A-2, leaving both assessments unchanged from its previous review in April this year.
Other credit rating agencies this year upgraded Greece’s creditworthiness – an index that measures how safe it is for investors to lend money to the country.
Greece investment grade in constant improvement
S&P was the fourth of the five credit rating agencies recognized by the European Central Bank to assess Greece during the second half of 2026, AMNA notes.
In September, Scope Ratings upgraded Greece to BBB+ from BBB, with a stable outlook. Moody’s, on the other hand, affirmed its Baa3 rating – one notch lower than BBB – but revised its outlook from stable to positive, while DBRS Morningstar also upgraded Greece’s outlook to positive, maintaining its rating at BBB.
Fitch Ratings will be the last to complete the year’s review cycle for Greece. The review is expected in November, with the country currently rated BBB with a stable outlook.
Greece’s creditworthiness has improved in recent years following its return to investment-grade status in 2023, after more than a decade below that threshold. S&P upgraded the country to BBB from BBB- in April 2025, reflecting sustained fiscal performance and progress in reducing public debt.
In its broader assessment of Greece’s economic prospects earlier this year, S&P stressed the country’s favorable medium-term growth expectations, improving fiscal trends and investment supported by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Overall, Greece is expected to continue growing faster than the eurozone average in the near term.
