Athens International Airport (AIA) will undergo significant redesign and expansion, with plans to boost its passenger capacity from 26 million to 40 million by 2032.
The announcement was made by the international consortium, Anemos, which includes renowned firms such as Grimshaw, Haptic, K-Studio, Arup, Leslie Jones, Triagonal, and Plan A.
Originally opened in 2001 and designed by Hochtief in preparation for the 2004 Athens Olympics, AIA is the largest airport in Greece, located just 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from the city center and connected to the busy Piraeus port.
The expansion and redesign of the Athens airport will be implemented in phases, keeping it operational throughout the process, and will involve extensive upgrades to the main terminal building (MTB), satellite terminal building (STB), and both landside and airside areas.
The design concept for the expansion aims to integrate the new structures with the existing architecture, creating a harmonious blend that reflects Athens’ rich history, vibrant present, and promising future.
The design is inspired by Athenian life, with a focus on efficiency, intuitive wayfinding, and a seamless flow of passengers. The materials chosen and the landscaping strategy will infuse the terminal with natural light and a sense of place, celebrating both the modern and ancient spirit of the city.
Key redesign highlights of Athens airport
The planned expansion and redesign of Athens International Airport will transform the passenger experience through innovative architecture, vibrant public spaces, and enhanced functionality. Key features include:
- Main terminal building: The addition of a new landside identity to the west, featuring a modular facade with vertical stone fins and six new portals that guide passengers toward the check-in and departures hall. The space will be flooded with daylight to enhance passenger flow and orientation.
- The oculus spaces: Two striking oculi (dome-like openings) will be created, offering memorable “Athenian moments” within the terminal. The North Oculus will feature a lush Mediterranean garden in a grand 24.5-meter-high circular space, while the South Oculus will offer three terraced levels of seating and landscaped areas, creating a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.
- Public and commercial spaces: The terminal will include flowing, active street spaces, balconies, VIP lounges, and a mix of commercial zones to foster a lively and dynamic environment for travelers.
