According to a comprehensive new study by BookRetreats.com, the city of Athens, Greece has officially been crowned the most walkable tourist destination in the world. Far from being a bustling metropolis, the Greek capital has emerged as the ultimate destination for “slow travel” and holistic well-being.
The ranking was developed in collaboration with Dr. Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, a Harvard-affiliated clinical psychologist and holistic happiness expert. As part of the Holiday Happiness Index, nearly 50 global cities were evaluated on five “feel-good” pillars: abundant sunlight, quality sleep, a healthy Mediterranean diet, time in nature, and physical exercise.
Athens secured a perfect score of 20 out of 20, largely due to its remarkable density of historic wonders and its ability to turn a simple stroll into a wellness experience.
Athens: An open-air museum in 30 minutes
What sets Athens apart is the sheer proximity of its legendary landmarks. The study measured the walking distance between key cultural sites, finding that visitors can traverse millennia of history in under half an hour.
Within the historic center, a single thirty-minute walk connects: The Acropolis & Parthenon, the Panathenaic Stadium (the world’s only all-marble stadium), the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the Ancient Agora & Temple of Hephaestus.
The Athenian atmosphere
While the short distances earned the high score, any traveler knows that Athens’ true walkability lies in its unrivaled atmosphere. The city has invested heavily in dedicated pedestrian zones, leading to a seamless flow through the historic heart.
From the scent of jasmine to the sounds of street musicians, walking is the only way to truly absorb the city’s pulse. While neighborhoods like Plaka and Anafiotika offer famously steep, labyrinthine paths, the effort is rewarded with sweeping views of marble monuments and the glittering Saronikos Gulf.
The “Great Walk of Athens” connects the city’s major archaeological sites, allowing tourists to explore without the noise or stress of traffic. Athens topped a prestigious list of international cities, outranking other walkable favorites known for their infrastructure and charm. Here are the top 5, according to BookRetreats.com:
1. Athens
2. Helsinki
3. Zurich
4. Prague
5. Rome
For the seven million tourists who visit annually, this study confirms what locals have always known: Athens is best experienced on foot. By blending physical activity with world-class history and Mediterranean sunlight, the city offers more than sightseeing—it offers a blueprint for holiday happiness.
