Greece has climbed into the top 10 European Union countries for paid streaming subscriptions, according to new figures from Eurostat. Four in 10 Greek internet users, or 40.2%, paid for a “film, series or sports” streaming service in 2025, ranking the country seventh among the EU’s 27 member states and placing it well above the bloc’s average.
That share marks a sharp rise from 2024, when 29.2% of Greek internet users held such a subscription. The jump of roughly 11 percentage points in a single year was among the steepest recorded across the bloc, pushing Greece ahead of larger economies including Germany and Austria.
EU-wide, just under a third of internet users, or 32.7%, held a paid subscription to a film, series or sports streaming service last year, Eurostat data showed.
That was the most popular of four subscription categories the agency tracks, ahead of music streaming at 23%, online news or magazine subscriptions at 7.2%, and gaming streaming services at 6.1%. The euro area posted a nearly identical average of 32.7%.

Ireland recorded the highest share of subscribers in this category, at 63.9%, followed by Denmark at 61.1% and the Netherlands at 59.2%. Sweden, Czechia and Luxembourg also ranked ahead of Greece, while Germany, Austria and Finland trailed just behind it, rounding out the top 10.
At the other end of the scale, Bulgaria recorded the smallest share, at 9.3%. Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania also posted some of the lowest rates in the bloc, each below 18%, underscoring a wide gap between northern and southeastern Europe.
Greece’s paid streaming subscriptions told a different story in other categories. Only 11.6% of Greek internet users paid for music streaming in 2025, well below the EU average, and just 1% subscribed to an online news or magazine service, among the lowest rates recorded anywhere in Europe. Gaming streaming subscriptions stood at 5.1%, also under the EU average.
The figures come from Eurostat’s annual survey on household internet use, last updated in April 2026, which covers all 27 EU member states along with several neighboring countries.
