A milestone development has been reached in the initiative to designate April 29 as the Day of Greeks Abroad officially. The proposal, originally spearheaded by the cultural association “Hephaestus Wien” and supported by a global network of Greek diaspora organizations, community leaders, and prominent figures, has reportedly received official endorsement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic.

Official Government Recognition

According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, in an official letter sent on August 18, 2026, to George Gstrein, President of Hephaestus Wien, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally acknowledged the significance of the well-documented proposal first submitted in 2021 to the Standing Committee on Greeks Abroad of the Hellenic Parliament.

According to the Ministry’s update, establishing this commemorative day aligns directly with the government’s strategic priority to deepen ties between the homeland and the global Greek community. The Ministry confirmed that administrative steps are underway, stating that “the relevant bill will be submitted to Parliament for enactment in the coming months.” A coordinated program of events in Greece and across the diaspora is also being planned to mark the occasion.

A Permanent Bridge for the Global Hellenic Community

The establishment of a dedicated day for the diaspora goes beyond mere symbolism. It aims to serve as an enduring institutional and educational framework—preserving collective memory, reinforcing intergenerational continuity, and honoring the immense contributions of overseas Greeks in promoting Hellenic language, culture, and values worldwide.

Hephaestus Wien expressed its profound satisfaction with this milestone and extended sincere gratitude to every organization and individual who endorsed the cause.

“The path toward establishing April 29 as the Day of Greeks Abroad continues with strong momentum. Our vision is for this date to serve as a permanent touchstone for Hellenes everywhere—a living bridge connecting Greece with its diaspora. The Greek diaspora is not just a chapter in our history, but a dynamic, creative, and vital force shaping our collective future.”
