The number of Americans visiting Greece has climbed 295% in a decade, with an estimated 1,685,000 U.S. residents flying there in 2025, up from 426,000 in 2015, according to the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office.
Survey figures for 2025 also show who those Americans visiting Greece are. Women made up 65.4% of the market against 34.6% men, and the average traveler was 50.2 years old. Groups were small, averaging 1.94 people. About 39.9% flew alone, and 39.6% traveled with a spouse or partner.
New York sent more visitors than any other state, at 199,000, or 11.8% of the total. California followed with 133,000, then Texas with 131,000 and Florida with 125,000. New Jersey accounted for 94,000 and Massachusetts for 77,000.
A decade on, Americans visiting Greece plan trips nearly six months ahead
These are planned trips, booked far ahead. Travelers decided on the trip an average of 176.9 days in advance and booked flights 111.9 days out. More than a third settled on Greece at least 181 days ahead.
Airlines were the most common source of planning information, used by 54.4%, followed by personal recommendations at 31.5% and online travel agencies at 24.6%.
Vacation was the main reason for the trip for 83.1% of travelers, while 8.3% came mainly to see friends or relatives. Sightseeing was the most common activity, planned by 93.3%, followed by shopping at 80.8%, historical locations at 68.2%, guided tours at 67.1%, and cultural or ethnic heritage sights at 58.2%.
Hotels or motels housed 78.6% of visitors, who stayed an average of 8.45 nights. Those who stayed in a private home stayed far longer, averaging 29.17 nights.
Trip bills top $4,400 per party, with incomes near $175,000
Spending was heavy. Travel parties spent an average of $4,416 outside the United States, or $2,275 per traveler, plus $2,813 per party on international airfare. Average household income among respondents was $174,549.
Few came for Greece alone. Italy appeared on 24.7% of itineraries and Turkey on 15.1%, while 17.5% of travelers also visited the Middle East.
The figures come from the Survey of International Air Travelers, run by CIC Research Inc. Greece drew 1,639 respondents in 2025.
