Two firefighters were killed on Tuesday while battling a fast-moving wildfire in southern Crete, marking a tragic day for Greece’s Fire Service as crews continued to battle the blaze amid strong winds and dangerous conditions.
The firefighters died during efforts to contain the wildfire near Krya Vrysi in the regional unit of Rethymno. According to Greek authorities, the two were found inside their firefighting vehicle. Initial reports indicate they were volunteer firefighters and may have died from asphyxiation, although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.
In a statement, the Hellenic Fire Service expressed its “deep sorrow” over the loss of the two firefighters, saying they “fell heroically in the line of duty while protecting the lives, property, and natural environment.”
“The leadership of the Fire Service extends its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of our fallen colleagues,” the statement said.
Massive firefighting operation underway
The wildfire broke out in a forested area near Nea Krya Vrysi and spread rapidly due to powerful winds, with gusts reaching 7 Beaufort.
Authorities deployed a major firefighting force, including 125 firefighters, six specialized ground teams, 27 fire engines, four helicopters, and four firefighting aircraft conducting repeated water drops. Water tankers and heavy machinery from the Municipality of Agios Vasileios have also joined the operation.
Emergency alerts were issued through Greece’s 112 warning system as the fire intensified. Residents were initially urged to remain on alert before authorities ordered evacuations from several communities, including Saktouria, Melampes, Agios Georgios, and Agios Pavlos, directing people to move toward the coastal town of Agia Galini.

The wildfire erupted while Crete was under a Category 4 (“Very High”) wildfire risk, with hot, dry weather and strong winds creating dangerous conditions across the island. Firefighters continued battling the blaze Tuesday evening as authorities worked to prevent further spread and protect nearby communities.
The deaths of the two firefighters are a stark reminder of the dangers emergency responders face during Greece’s increasingly harsh wildfire seasons.
