A wildfire broke out Tuesday afternoon on the Cycladic island of Paros, prompting emergency evacuations and a major firefighting response as authorities worked to prevent the blaze from spreading toward nearby communities. The fire ignited around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in an area of low vegetation and waste near Kambi, where dry conditions and summer heat raised concerns about its potential to expand rapidly.

Greece’s Civil Protection service issued multiple emergency alerts through the 112 warning system, instructing residents in the settlements of Agios Charalambos, Kambi, Bougados, Aneratzia, and later Kamari, to evacuate toward the coastal village of Aliki as a precaution. Officials emphasized that the orders were intended to ensure public safety while firefighting operations continued.

Firefighting crews were quickly reinforced both by land and air. Aircraft and helicopters carried out water drops over the affected area while additional firefighters and equipment were transported by ferry from the neighboring islands of Naxos and Syros to strengthen the response. Local authorities also deployed water tankers and heavy machinery to assist in containing the blaze.

No injuries or damage to homes had been reported in the initial stages of the emergency, although officials continued to monitor the situation closely as changing winds posed a risk of flare-ups. The cause of the wildfire remained under investigation.

The Paros fire comes as Greece remains on heightened wildfire alert during the peak summer season. Civil protection authorities have warned that several regions, including parts of the Aegean, face elevated fire danger because of high temperatures, dry vegetation, and seasonal winds, prompting increased readiness across the country’s firefighting services.
