Australian classicist Professor Marguerite Johnson, whose career was devoted to studying ancient Greek literature and culture, had spent much of her life exploring Greece’s past before choosing the country as her home.
That new chapter ended tragically when Johnson and her partner Leni Johnson were killed in a road accident on the Greek island of Lesvos, where they had moved after retirement.
A fundraiser has since been launched to support their family following the sudden loss of the couple, who had begun building a new life on the island.
A scholar who made Greece her home
Marguerite Johnson was a respected scholar of Classics and Ancient History, known internationally for her research into ancient Greek and Roman literature, mythology, gender and sexuality in antiquity.
She held academic positions in Australia, including at the University of Queensland and the University of Newcastle, and was widely recognized for making classical studies accessible to students and the broader public.
Among her academic interests was the poetry of Sappho, the ancient Greek poet from Lesvos whose work has shaped the study of literature, identity and the ancient Mediterranean world.
Her connection to Greece was therefore not only professional but deeply personal. After retirement, Johnson and her partner chose Lesvos as the place where they would begin a new phase of their lives.
Tragedy on Lesvos
The couple were killed in a road accident on Lesvos earlier in July. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Their deaths prompted tributes from colleagues, friends and members of the academic community, who remembered Johnson as a passionate educator, gifted researcher and devoted advocate for the study of the ancient world.
For many who knew her work, the tragedy carried a particular poignancy: Johnson had spent decades studying Greece’s ancient voices before eventually making modern Greece her home.
Fundraiser launched after sudden loss
Following the accident, a fundraising campaign was established to help support the family as they deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.

Lesvos, an island with one of the strongest connections to ancient Greek poetry through Sappho, became the setting for the final chapter of her life.
