Prominent Greek criminal defense attorney Stavros Georgiou was found dead Tuesday night inside his law office in central Athens, prompting a major homicide investigation after police discovered what officials described as suspicious circumstances at the scene.
Georgiou’s daughters reportedly went to his office on Tritis Septemvriou Street after relatives were unable to contact him for several hours. Upon entering the office, they found the veteran lawyer dead and immediately alerted authorities.
According to police and investigative sources, Georgiou was discovered lying in a fetal position, while blood was visible at scene, and his clothes scattered around the room. Some reports also state that he was found inside a section of the office that had been converted into a bedroom. While authorities have not officially confirmed every detail reported from the scene, investigators are treating the death as suspicious and are examining the possibility of a criminal act.
Police officers have cordoned off the area as detectives from the Hellenic Police Homicide Division and forensic experts launched an extensive examination of the office.

Investigators are collecting biological and forensic evidence from the office while reviewing surveillance camera footage from nearby buildings in an effort to reconstruct the lawyer’s final movements and determine whether anyone entered or left the premises around the time of his death.

The autopsy and laboratory examinations are expected to determine the exact cause and time of death and whether Georgiou suffered injuries consistent with a violent assault.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects, emphasizing that the investigation remains in its early stages.

His courtroom appearances and legal commentary made him a familiar figure in Greece’s judicial community.
News of his death has shocked colleagues in the legal profession, many of whom expressed disbelief as police continued examining the circumstances surrounding the case.
