Supporters attending a football match involving one of Australia’s most prominent Greek community clubs displayed an anti-Greek banner alongside flags bearing the Vergina Sun, prompting an investigation by Football Victoria and condemnation from both league officials and the rival club.
During Saturday’s National Premier Leagues Victoria match between South Melbourne FC and Preston Lions at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, a section of Preston Lions supporters unfurled a large banner reading “ANTI-HELLASS” while waving red flags featuring the Vergina Sun, an ancient Macedonian emblem that has long been at the center of the dispute between Greece and North Macedonia.
The display also included racist and sexist messages, according to Football Victoria, which described the behavior as “abhorrent” and confirmed it has launched a formal investigation in cooperation with Victoria Police.
South Melbourne FC has deep Greek roots
South Melbourne FC is one of Australia’s most successful football clubs and has been closely associated with Melbourne’s Greek-Australian community since its formation in 1959 through the merger of Greek-backed clubs. The club remains an important cultural institution for the Greek diaspora.
The anti-Greek banner and the display of Vergina Sun flags overshadowed the match itself, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Football Victoria said discriminatory behavior has no place in the sport and pledged to hold those responsible accountable under its disciplinary regulations.
“The behavior displayed by a section of Preston Lions supporters is completely unacceptable and has no place in our game or our community,” the governing body said in a statement. The organization confirmed it is working with Victoria Police to identify those responsible and determine what disciplinary action should follow.
Preston Lions also condemned the conduct, saying it was deeply disappointed by the actions of a small group of supporters. The club said it does not tolerate discriminatory behavior and would cooperate fully with Football Victoria’s investigation. It also noted that only approved banners are permitted inside its supporter areas.
Vergina Sun remains a sensitive symbol
The Vergina Sun, discovered in the royal tombs at Vergina in northern Greece, is widely regarded by Greece as an important symbol of ancient Macedonian heritage. Its use became one of the central issues in the decades-long dispute between Greece and what is now North Macedonia over the name “Macedonia” and related historical symbols.
Although the 2018 Prespa Agreement resolved the country’s name dispute, the public display of the Vergina Sun in anti-Greek contexts continues to provoke strong reactions among Greeks both in Greece and throughout the diaspora.
Football Victoria has not announced when its investigation will conclude, and authorities have not publicly identified the individuals responsible for the banners and displays.
