The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in a massive blockbuster deal reported by ESPN.
The trade brings an end to a highly anticipated offseason sweepstakes, with the Heat beating out the Boston Celtics by offering a package centered around young, cost-controlled talent and draft capital. Just hours before the news broke, the two-time MVP shared a reflective message on his social media accounts:
“GOD, I trusted you at the beginning, and I will continue to trust you throughout,” Antetokounmpo posted on Instagram.
The trade framework
Miami is sending a significant haul of players and future picks to Milwaukee to secure the 31-year-old superstar, while also bringing back veteran forward Bobby Portis to solidify their frontcourt depth.
According to insiders, the Bucks front office faced a self-imposed deadline with the 2026 NBA Draft looming, forcing them to deliberate between two completely different trade frameworks.
The Boston Celtics made a late, aggressive push to land the Greek star, offering a package headlined by All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown and two first-round selections. Ultimately, Milwaukee favored Miami’s package, opting for a youth movement and a larger surplus of long-term draft assets over taking on a super-max contract.
The acquisition places Antetokounmpo alongside Bam Adebayo, instantly creating one of the most formidable defensive frontcourts in the NBA. All signs indicate that the Heat intend to sign Antetokounmpo to a massive, long-term contract extension later this year. While the trade terms are agreed upon, the deal cannot be officially executed until July 6, giving both franchises the window to potentially recruit a third team to expand the transaction.
