Maria Karystianou, the mother of a victim of the Tempi railway disaster, has formally entered Greek politics, unveiling her new political party, “Hope for Democracy.”
Speaking to a packed audience at the Olympion theater in Thessaloniki, the 53-year-old pediatrician rolled out a platform pairing anti-establishment rhetoric with wide-ranging social and economic policies. The party’s symbol, a dove carrying an olive branch, underscores its message of renewal and peace.
“Today, Hope for Democracy is born,” Karystianou said during an emotional speech, preceded by the music of the late cultural icon Mikis Theodorakis. “Today, society demands an end to the degradation of our country. The healthy, conscious part of Greece has awakened and united. We have not come to become part of a rotten system, but to clash with the very system that destroyed our trust.”
Karystianou’s manifesto for accountability and reform
Presenting the party’s founding declaration, Karystianou outlined a broad, citizen-centric platform aimed at restoring public trust. Key pillars of the manifesto include:
Rule of Law & Governance: Establishing a true separation of powers, ensuring judicial independence, and enforcing strict oversight on all public contracts.
Public Safety & Transport: Guaranteeing immediate, visible changes so citizens feel safe, with a specific commitment to a transparent framework for monitoring, maintaining, and upgrading public transport networks through independent oversight.
Social Welfare & Health: Reconstructing the National Health System (NHS/ΕΣΥ), supporting families and youth, and expanding welfare for the elderly, vulnerable groups, and people with disabilities—including restoring pensioners’ frozen benefits.
Economic Security: Protecting primary residences from foreclosure, ensuring transparency in banking operations, supporting small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), safeguarding labor rights, and carving out a national strategic development plan.
Education & Media: Overhauling the public education system and ensuring the absolute independence of mass media.
Sovereignty: Defending Greece’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

From tragedy to the political arena
Karystianou rose to national prominence as the president of the association representing families of the 2023 Tempi rail disaster. Her 19-year-old daughter was among the 57 victims of the catastrophic head-on collision between a passenger train and a freight train operating on the same track. The tragedy shocked Greek society, exposing severe infrastructure failures and sparking massive protests amid allegations of a government cover-up.
While Karystianou initially commanded universal sympathy, her path into politics has drawn scrutiny. She has occasionally polarized public opinion—including among other bereaved families—with rhetoric that veered toward populist themes, particularly on foreign policy and social issues. On Thursday, however, she steered clear of divisive cultural debates, focusing instead on universal bread-and-butter issues, rural communities, and animal welfare.
“I stand before you today as a mother and a pediatrician whose livelihood depends on her work alone,” she noted. “Beside me stand those who died unfairly, but also all those who live and dream of a bright future.”
The launch event drew a significant crowd, requiring giant outdoor screens to broadcast the proceedings to onlookers outside the theater, where attendees queued to sign the party’s founding roster.
