Maria Karystianou, a mother who tragically lost her 20-year-old daughter in the Tempi railway disaster, which claimed the lives of 57 people, has become a tragic heroine, uniting the people of Greece under a simple cause: justice.
People from all walks of life have joined the mother who, for two years now, has only been voicing α plea for justice. Yet that plea has been magnified along with the voices of over one million people. This simple plea has turned into a loud demand for justice. Justice that hasn’t been served for two years.
In the two years since, as the investigation has stagnated, a growing demand for transparency has taken hold. A large part of the Greek population believes that judicial authorities have not fully investigated the case and that the true culprits remain unidentified, leading many to suspect that those responsible for the Tempi railway disaster are being sheltered by their governmental positions and parliamentary immunity. In fact, a public opinion poll conducted by ALCO found that 72% of respondents believed the government attempted a ‘cover-up.
The demonstration scheduled for Friday, February 28, is an unprecedented event unlike any other in modern Greek history. On that day, almost all of the public and private sectors will participate in the strike and rally, marking the second anniversary of a tragedy that resulted in the deaths of 57 people, mostly young, and the government’s failure to bring those responsible to justice.
The mass demonstration in Athens, set to occur in front of the Greek Parliament, will be one of about 240 rallies scheduled in Greece and major cities worldwide where Greek people reside.
One can safely say that this woman, this grieving mother, achieved all this mobilization through patience, persistence, determination, and fearlessness.
The struggle for justice
Maria Karystianou proved to be a strong advocate for justice. She began speaking for the innocent victims of the tragic railway collision and their grieving families. She also highlighted the neglect of railway safety, which, truth be told, has not been adequately addressed by any government since Greece’s 2010 bankruptcy.
Her voice resonated as a powerful call against the silence of a government accused of showing a troubling indifference toward conducting a thorough investigation. Most of the Greeks believe the government lacked the political will to pursue justice, while the justice system appeared to overlook the hard evidence of a possible cover-up. Judicial procedures moved at an agonizingly slow pace, leading many to believe that those in power hoped the tragedy would fade from memory and that Ms. Karystianou would abandon her pursuit of the truth.
Ms. Karystianou refused to “grieve silently” as some government members indirectly suggested. Instead, the grieving mother sparked a movement calling to punish all guilty individuals, whether politicians, businessmen, senior executives, railway employees, or common criminals. A wave of righteous anger spread throughout the country.
The mother’s struggle for justice in Greece and the appeal to the European Parliament
The mother of the 20-year-old victim soon felt that the Greek judicial system—from regional prosecutors to the Supreme Court—stalled or silently refused to seek out the culprits, and that her appeals were ignored or refuted. In fact, after hearing her case, the Supreme Court prosecutor advised Ms. Karystianou to seek psychological support from the Orthodox Church. The grieving mother had no choice but to take the matter to the European Parliament.
In her five-minute speech to the European Parliament Committee on Petitions, Ms. Karystianou described what she viewed as the dire state of the rule of law in Greece, referring to a “lawless state” that provides immunity to political figures who have been involved in the deaths of 57 innocent lives.
It was a courageous move, showing perseverance and mental strength in the struggle for the vindication of the Tempi victims. The grieving mother focused on the two main points of the case that are pending and make it difficult to thoroughly investigate the train collision’s cause: the parliamentary immunity of then-transportation minister Kostas Achileas Karamanlis and the suspicious covering up of the accident site with concrete.
To this day, no one has taken responsibility for giving the order to cement the train collision site. Initially, it was reported that the order came from high up.
Ms. Karystianou emphasized three key issues she wants the Petitions Committee to address concerning Greece: the rule of law, the protection of life and health of Greek citizens, and transportation safety. These are fundamental in a democratic society. However, she had to seek assistance from a European institution to support her legitimate demands, which stem from the criminal irresponsibility of the authorities.
Ms. Karystianou also succeeded in uniting over 1.3 million Greeks to sign a resolution holding accountable every political figure involved in the outcome of the fatal railway journey.
Resilient despite the mudslinging
The tragic Tempi mother, who shook Greece, was the recipient of extensive mudslinging from several members of the the ruling party, affiliated press, and social media trolls. Yet, one more time, she proved resilient to the continuous attacks against her. The first accusation against her was that her main purpose was to enter politics with the opposition, Syriza. She was told, both directly and indirectly, that she was exploiting the death of her daughter for her political ambitions. She denied this repeatedly and showed no sign of such ambitions.
Her personal life then came to the forefront. According to reports in government-friendly media, she allegedly lost custody of her two children to her former husband following their divorce. However, her former husband publicly denied this claim.
With only one day remaining until the Tempi mass demonstration in Athens and 240 other cities across Greece and the world, it is time for the Greek people to voice their opinions. Regardless of the outcome, Friday, February 28, 2025, belongs to Maria Karystianou and the families who lost their loved ones in the Tempi railway tragedy. They are the true heroes of the day and deserve to be vindicated at last.
