Stefanos Linaios, a towering figure of the Greek stage, screen, and intellectual life, has passed away at the age of 98. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Margarita Mytilinaiou, who paid a deeply moving tribute to her father’s legacy of integrity and passion.
Reflecting on his life, his daughter wrote: “You left us full of years, smiling and full of love—a rare feat. Throughout your life, you fought for what you believed to be honest, just, and democratic. Struggles, anxieties, exile, economic hardships, political disappointments—you faced them all, and you overcame them all.”
Linaios was more than just an actor; he was a writer, director, theatrical entrepreneur, and activist. He was also a lifelong companion—in both life and art—to his beloved wife, the distinguished actress Elli Fotiou.
Stefanos Linaios: A prolific career
Born in 1927, Linaios graduated from the Athens Drama School in 1951, later refining his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London in 1969. His career spanned seven decades:
The Stage & Screen: Between 1954 and 1967 alone, he collaborated with over 20 theatrical troupes and performed in 100 plays. His filmography is equally vast, with appearances in over 100 movies, alongside extensive work in television and radio.
The Alpha Theatre: Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the “Sygchrono Elliniko Theatro” (Modern Greek Theatre), which he founded at the historic “Alfa” Theatre in Athens.
Intellectual Contributions: A man of letters, Linaios authored works such as the short story collection Some Deaths (Merikoi Thanatoi) and influential essays like TV: A Medium of Education. His research on the latter was instrumental in the establishment of educational television programming on the Greek public broadcaster, ERT.
A voice for democracy
Linaios never shied away from the political challenges of his time. He was a committed democrat who suffered the consequences of his convictions during the Greek military junta (1967–1974), which removed him from his position as General Secretary of the Hellenic Actors’ Union (1966–1967) due to his political activities.
Following the restoration of democracy, he remained active in public life, serving as a Member of Parliament for the A’ Athens district for PASOK (1989–1990). He also held leadership roles in the Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute and was a member of the British Actors’ Equity Association.
Stefanos Linaios leaves behind a legacy of resilience, profound cultural impact, and an unwavering commitment to the arts. He will be remembered as a man who lived his convictions as boldly as he played his roles.
