The fate of the Ark of the Covenant, a sacred chest believed to hold the Ten Commandments, remains unknown. Researchers say renewed study and modern technology are offering new ways to explore what may have happened to the ancient relic.
The Ark is described in the Bible as an object built by the Israelites after leaving Egypt, often linked to Moses. It was said to contain stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments and was viewed as a symbol of divine presence.
Disappearance tied to destruction of Jerusalem
Historical accounts place the Ark inside the Holy of Holies in the ancient temple in Jerusalem. Its trail disappears after the Babylonian sack of Jerusalem, when the First Temple was destroyed.
Since then, no confirmed record has explained what became of the object. Some historians suggest it was hidden before the invasion. Others believe it may have been destroyed or taken.
New theory focuses on underground spaces
Archaeologist Chris McKinny has proposed that the Ark may have been deliberately concealed. He points to underground areas in the City of David, located just south of the Temple Mount, as possible locations.
Researchers are now exploring these areas using non-invasive methods. One key approach involves muon detectors, which track subatomic particles created when cosmic rays strike Earth’s atmosphere. By studying how these particles pass through solid material, scientists can identify hidden chambers beneath the surface.
Early scans have revealed previously unknown voids and structures. Researchers say these findings support the possibility of underground networks that could have served as hiding places.
Temple Mount remains largely unexplored

Scientists say the technology could eventually be used near the Temple Mount. However, excavation at the site is heavily restricted due to religious and political sensitivities. As a result, it remains one of the least explored areas in archaeology.
McKinny has emphasized that such work is a long-term possibility rather than an active excavation effort.
Ancient traditions offer clues
In his documentary Legends of the Lost Ark, McKinny examines historical accounts suggesting the Ark was hidden before Jerusalem’s fall. One tradition places it beneath the Temple Mount.
Another links it to the prophet Jeremiah, who is said to have concealed it in a remote location. A third, recorded in the Book of 2 Maccabees, claims it was taken to a cave on Mount Nebo.
Despite differences, these accounts share a common idea. Each suggests the Ark was intentionally hidden to protect it during a time of crisis.
Search continues despite lack of evidence
Experts caution that no physical evidence has confirmed the Ark’s existence or location. Much of the current understanding relies on religious texts and historical interpretation.
Still, researchers say advances in imaging and remote-sensing tools may one day provide clearer answers. Until then, the Ark of the Covenant remains one of history’s most enduring and debated mysteries.
