Based on the report from DiscoverCars.com, Athens has officially entered the top 10 most tourist-dense cities in the world for 2025. This ranking highlights a significant shift in the city’s character, as it balances its ancient heritage with the pressures of being one of the globe’s most visited capitals.
Focus on Athens: Europe’s oldest capital under the spotlight
Athens rounds off the global top ten, driven by its dual identity as a “living museum” and a vibrant modern metropolis. According to the report:
The Density Ratio: Athens welcomed 10.2 million international visitors in 2025 against a local population of 640,000. This results in 1,594 tourists for every 100 locals, a figure that underscores the sheer volume of foot traffic in neighborhoods like Plaka and around the Acropolis.
Ancient Meets Modern: While the Acropolis remains the primary draw, the study notes that tourists are increasingly exploring the city’s street art and cafe culture, contributing to a density that rivals cities like Lisbon and Edinburgh.
The global top 10 most tourist-dense cities (2025)
1. Dubrovnik, Croatia (16,250 tourists per 100 locals)
The clear leader in “overtourism,” this UNESCO site saw 6.5 million visitors to just 40,000 residents. The “Game of Thrones” effect continues to draw massive crowds to its historic city walls.
2. Reykjavík, Iceland (5,286 tourists per 100 locals)
Despite its small population, Iceland’s capital remains a massive hub for nature lovers, with 7.4 million visitors flocking to its museums and nearby geothermal spas.
3. Venice, Italy (4,240 tourists per 100 locals)
The “Floating City” remains iconic, drawing 10.6 million tourists. The density is so high that local authorities have famously implemented entry fees to manage the visitor-to-local imbalance.
4. Geneva, Switzerland (3,900 tourists per 100 locals)
A surprising fourth place, Geneva’s high ratio is due to its relatively small local population compared to the 7.8 million visitors attracted by the Swiss Alps and Lake Geneva.
5. Porto, Portugal (2,800 tourists per 100 locals)
Known for its colorful tiled buildings and port wine, Porto’s 7 million visitors significantly outnumber its 250,000 residents, particularly in the historic Ribeira District.
6. Phuket, Thailand (2,080 tourists per 100 locals)
As the only Asian destination in the top ten, Phuket remains a powerhouse for tropical tourism, with 5.2 million visitors overwhelming the local infrastructure.
7. Florence, Italy (2,028 tourists per 100 locals)
As an “open-air museum” of the Renaissance, Florence welcomed 7.3 million art lovers last year, creating a dense atmosphere around its famous Duomo and galleries.
8. Lisbon, Portugal (1,793 tourists per 100 locals)
The Portuguese capital attracts over 10 million visitors, who fill its narrow, soulful streets to hear Fado or visit 16th-century monasteries.
9. Edinburgh, United Kingdom (1,714 tourists per 100 locals)
Driven largely by the summer Fringe Festival and its medieval Old Town, the Scottish capital sees a massive influx of 8.4 million people annually.
10. Athens, Greece (1,594 tourists per 100 locals)
Europe’s oldest capital completes the list, marking a historic high in its tourist-to-local ratio as it continues to grow as a year-round destination for global travelers.
