US Vice-President JD Vance said Iran chose not to accept the American terms for a peace deal after exiting meetings with an Iranian delegation that went on for 21 hours in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Diplomatic delegations from the United States and Iran had been convening in the Pakistani capital Islamabad since Saturday early morning to initiate high-level peace negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf.

US and Iran talks fail to reach peace deal

The talks placed Islamabad under a massive security grip, with local reports describing the city as nearly deserted due to the stringent safety protocols in place.

The American delegation was led by US Vice President JD Vance, while the Iranian side is represented by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The meeting was a critical failure in de-escalating a regional war that has severely impacted international maritime security and global energy markets.

What the Iranians say on the peace deal failure

The Iranian state media published a statement from the Iranian delegation after the end of the talks:

“The Iranian delegation negotiated continuously and intensively for 21 hours in order to protect the national interests of the Iranian people; despite various initiatives from the Iranian delegation, the unreasonable demands of the American side prevented the progress of the negotiations.

“Thus the negotiations ended,” the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) said on Telegram.
