Despite persistent geopolitical instability in the Middle East, Athens International Airport (AIA) demonstrated remarkable resilience in March 2026, recording 2.31 million passengers. This represents a 3.8% increase compared to March 2025.
While AIA officials noted a slight deceleration in growth relative to the record-breaking figures of January and February, the monthly performance remained firmly in the black. Domestic traffic led the March gains with a 4.8% uptick, while international traveler volume rose by 3.4%.
The first quarter of 2026 paints a picture of a robust aviation sector. Total traffic for the three months hit 6.28 million passengers—an impressive 8.1% surge over the previous year. This growth was well-balanced, with domestic and international sectors expanding by 7.1% and 8.5%, respectively.
Flight operations mirrored this upward trend. AIA handled a total of 54,181 flights during the first quarter, marking a 7% increase. International flight volume saw the most significant boost, rising 7.6% as carriers continued to expand their networks into Athens, while domestic flight movements increased by 5.9%. These figures suggest that Athens continues to solidify its position as a primary European hub, successfully weathering regional headwinds to maintain its trajectory of steady, year-on-year growth.
Middle East war and Greek tourism
The escalation of tension in the Middle East has reignited concerns regarding the impact of geopolitical developments on Greek tourism.
Industry concerns are focused on two primary pillars, namely traveler psychology and transportation costs. The industry is well aware that traveler sentiment can shift rapidly, especially if tensions persist or disrupt international transit. A prolonged spike in fuel prices could drive up airfares, subsequently increasing the total cost of vacation packages.
