Giannis Antetokounmpo has expanded his growing sports investment portfolio by joining the ownership group of Chelsea Women, the reigning champions of the Women’s Super League in English football.
The Greek Freak and Milwaukee Bucks star announced the move late on Saturday, confirming he has partnered with entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian to invest in the London club.
Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and husband of tennis great Serena Williams, acquired a 10 per cent stake in Chelsea Women from BlueCo in May 2025 and is currently an investor and board member of the team.
Antetokounmpo on Chelsea
In a message shared on social media, Antetokounmpo said he was “proud and honored” to join Chelsea Women’s ownership, describing the club as one “built on passion, excellence, and a winning culture.” He added that his involvement was aimed at supporting the continued growth of women’s sport and “pushing the game to new heights.”
Antetokounmpo is a long-time football fan and joins a growing list of elite athletes investing in the women’s game, which continues to grow in popularity worldwide. The 31-year-old Greek player has previously spoken about football’s importance in his upbringing, noting that his late father was a soccer player and that the sport was central to family life before he switched his focus to basketball as a teenager.
Chelsea Women represents Antetokounmpo’s latest addition to a diverse portfolio of sports investments. In 2023, he and his brothers Alex, Kostas and Thanasis became minority owners of Major League Soccer side Nashville SC. Antetokounmpo also owns a stake in the Major League Baseball franchise Milwaukee Brewers, further underlining his interest in long-term sports ventures beyond the NBA.
An Arsenal fan owning Chelsea?
While now aligned with Chelsea, Antetokounmpo has previously admitted to supporting rival English clubs. In past interviews, he identified himself as an Arsenal fan, citing Thierry Henry as his favorite player, though he later suggested his allegiance had shifted towards Real Madrid. Despite those comments, his new role makes Chelsea Women the first English club in which he has taken an ownership position.
Ohanian, announcing his own involvement last year, said he had once again “bet big on women’s sports,” expressing an ambition to help Chelsea Women grow its global reach, particularly in the United States. The investment comes during a busy period off the court for Antetokounmpo. Earlier this week, he drew attention after partnering with prediction market Kalshi, shortly after deciding not to pursue a move away from the Bucks at the NBA trade deadline despite widespread speculation.
On the pitch, Chelsea Women face a challenging end to the season. The team travel to Tottenham this weekend and sit twelve points behind leaders Manchester City, leaving them on course to miss out on the WSL title for the first time since 2019. However, the club has recently secured Head Coach Sonia Bompastor on a new contract, signaling continuity as Antetokounmpo joins the project.
