Syrrako in Epirus, Greece, often called the “Stone Ornament” of the Tzoumerka range, is a stunning mountain village that preserves the echoes of its former glory.
In recent years, a new desire has emerged: a longing to return to our roots and find solace in quiet destinations. Travelers are increasingly turning away from “celebrity” hotspots and the flood of mass-produced tourist replicas to discover the hidden gems. These are places rich in history and culture, perfect for the “informed” explorer rather than the casual tourist. At the top of this list is Syrrako.
Perched at an altitude of 1,150 meters (3,772 ft) on the slopes of Mount Lakmos, Syrrako is a protected traditional settlement where stone defines every corner. This is the birthplace of the great poet Kostas Krystallis, a village where locals carry a deep sense of pride. Though the winding mountain roads can be challenging—and occasionally cut off by winter snow—the reward for the journey is unparalleled.
A walk through living history
Upon arrival, you leave your car behind. Syrrako is entirely pedestrianized, allowing you to immerse yourself in its cobblestone masterwork. Visitors are greeted by two iconic arched stone bridges: the lush, plane-tree-shaded Pountea Nouaua and the rugged, almost otherworldly Pountea Nik.
Before getting to the village center, stop at the Goura structure. Completed in the mid-15th century, its imposing pumice-stone dome remains a marvel of local architecture. In the village square, you will find the statues of Prime Minister Ioannis Kolettis and the poet Zalokostas, standing as silent guardians of the village’s 1912 liberation.
Don’t miss:
- The Krystallis Mansion: Once home to the famous writer, it now serves as a Folklore Museum and library.
- Kipina Monastery: A breathtaking monastery carved directly into a sheer cliff face above the Kalarrytikos gorge. Access is via a path hewn into the rock and a hanging wooden bridge.
- The Chrousia Ravine: A historic hiking trail that connects Syrrako with its “twin” village, Kalarrytes.
- Local flavor: No visit is complete without trying authentic Epirus pies and the potent local dishes.
