California’s Lieutenant Governor, Eleni Kounalakis, who is campaigning for State Treasurer, has received the support of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She also appealed for support before the end-of-year fundraising deadline.
The Greek American politician previously ran for governor of California in 2018. She did not attain the position but did succeed in becoming the state’s first-ever female lieutenant governor.
“As we close out this year I want to speak with you directly about what’s at stake— and ask for your help before the end-of-year fundraising deadline,” Kounalakis said in a statement via email. “I’m running for Treasurer because Californians deserve a steady, experienced leader who will safeguard public funds, invest responsibly, and keep our economy strong for working families. This role matters, and the decisions we make now will shape our state’s financial future for years to come.”
“That’s why I’m honored to have the support of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi,” Kounalakis said. “Speaker Pelosi knows what it takes to lead in difficult moments, to stand up to powerful interests, and to deliver results for the people we serve. She recorded a short message explaining why she believes in this campaign and why this race is so important right now.”

“As we approach midnight on December 31, this is our final chance to show the strength of this campaign before the new year begins,” Kounalakis noted. “End-of-year fundraising goals matter—to the media, to future supporters, and to the opponents who would love to see us fall short.”
Eleni Kounalakis’ Greek background
Kounalakis, who is of Greek descent, has spoken in the past about the influence of her Greek immigrant background. “I grew up as the daughter of a Greek immigrant and like many other families, we had humble beginnings. My siblings and I were reminded every day how lucky we were to have the opportunity this country offers,” she said when launching her campaign in April.
Her father, Angelo Tsakopoulos is also a big name in the Greek American community. Prior to becoming a well-known philanthropist and political donor, he worked as a field laborer and sold melons on the streets in his youth. He even worked as a waiter in the Governor’s Mansion at one point. This was all before he transformed his real estate business into a development empire.
